25 Years On and Divided We Stand
Today being the anniversary of 9/11, it has been another couple weeks leading up to today of reflection and contemplation on where the world and the US is standing. I like many other years, took time with each class to talk about how 9/11 changed the US and the world. That being said, there was a moment today while showing my students news clips of a 9/11 broadcast, where they showed shots of Americans walking around with US Flags or signs that read, “United We Stand”. I remember that for a few years after 9/11, America felt like a very united country. Today I had the realization of just how much America had changed when I saw a U.S. flag in the news clip being lowered to half mast because of the lives lost during the attack on the Trade Towers. Today, President Trump also ordered that our flag be lowered to half mast in honor of Charlie Kirk who lost his life the day prior. The video clips I showed my students today was a very different America where we lowered the Flag in solidarity as a nation, whereas 25 years later, we now lower the Flag as a divided nation. There is something sincerely wrong with American society and the system in which it pledges to emulate. It breaks my heart and spirit to see the U.S. in a constant state of violence and distrust of one another. Please help pray for the U.S. and for relationships between nation states around the world.
