Interesting Flags from Around the World

Photos Hosted by Picasa Web Albums I was assisting my supervisor in the International Education Center at FSU and the task at hand was organizing a box full of flags. Anyways as I was shuffling through all of the various flags, I decided to take a quick snapshot of the flags I found the most interesting. The first flag that I thought was interesting was from the country of Ghana. I am not sure what the bird is, but my guess is that its a chicken!

Photos Hosted by Picasa Web Albums The second flag I thought was interesting is the photo above, it is from the country of Dominica. I thought that a parrot was an interesting bird to use for one’s flag. I also thought it is cute how this parrot is portrayed as a cartoony kind of parrot.

The next flag is from the country of Martinique, which is apparently founded around the Galapagos Islands and is French territory. I really hate snakes and I think most countries portray snakes as deceptive/ evil creatures. I thought it was interesting that of all the beautiful animals in the world, why would you chose a SNAKE?!
Photos Hosted by Picasa Web AlbumsI thought it was weird how people were present on this flag and two people with what appears to be weapons. Apparently the country of Belize chose this image as a reminder of the oppression they encounter under the British.

This project of organizing and labeling flags was very interesting and I learned a lot about the different countries in the process! If anyone has some flags that they think are interesting, please leave a comment describing it!

Wearable Technology

This is the one I purchased

Today I was surfing the web looking for some new Cantonese/Mandarin CDs on a site that I often visit. As I was looking through the new release section, my eyes caught hold of an ad on their page. Yesasia.com is one of the few places within North America that are currently selling these pretty cool USB bracelets. We have been hearing this new term “wearable technology” for the past year or so and we are just now beginning to see different examples of what they actually mean. Another example of this term would be how the iPod Nano can be made into a wristwatch with a after market accessory.

Wearable Technology

Technology has always been a hug interest of mine and even though I am not as big a geek as I once was, I still appreciate unique things. Most of my gadgets are not microUSB compatible, but once I saw the iPod convertor, I was sold. Mohzy is apparently a Canadian company but as of now, they are not offering this accessory in North America. If you are interested in buying one I highly recommend you head over to YesAsia for now. Hopefully within the next few months, Mohzy will begin offering shipment inside the US. The convergence is happening and I am excited to see how technology is being incorporated in fashion. This will be the second piece of wearable technology I own, the first being a wristwatch I purchased in Hong Kong that has a wireless octopus card (HK Debit Card) built in, though I cannot use that functionality here in the USA. Anyways I thought this was cool and I wanted to share this cool microUSB bracelet with you my readers. (^.^)v

Siberia

Today has been one of those days of constant procrastination! I have had several assignments due today for two different classes and I have managed to get them in when they were due, but it did take an act of Congress! During the time I should have been working more diligently on my homework, I was wasting time checking out some music streaming services online. I have been contemplating purchasing a subscription to one of the following music services: Rhapsody, Spotify, Rdio or the Zune Music Pass. Well despite our wonderful capitalistic society, all of the services are the same price! Talk about a monopoly (probably established by the record companies). All of the services range from $5 for the web online access version of their content to the $10 a month fee to stream the services to multiple devices, such as an iPod Touch.

Well needless to say, I rarely listen to music on my computer anymore because the stereo I got over the summer has an iPod dock along with a 3.5mm input for any other device that has a headphone jack. I definitely want the ability to play one of these services off my iPod Touch. The one service which sastifies a wider range of my ecletic tastes is Spotify, but I have been interested in Rdio. The good thing about any of these services is there is no contract required. So if I want to check one service out over the other, I have that opportunity. So why did I embedd a youtube clip of LIGHTS? Well as I was exploring these services, I realized that LIGHTS had an album which was released last year. I managed to get her single Toes when it was first released, but with how busy life has been I am surprise I remember anything! Anyways I really enjoy her stuff and I think this Siberia song is actually pretty catchy and I like the lyrics. My favorite track on this Siberia CD though by far is called Everybody Breaks a Glass. I wanted to give a quick recommendation for this album and also ask if anyone thinks one of those services previously mentioned were better than the other. I think the one I was least impressed with was the Zune pass, mostly because I have an iOS device, Macbook Pro and I use Ubuntu. Microsoft is the last on my list when it comes to compatitbility for obvious reasons. Anyways leave a comment about the pros and cons of the services that you use and I would greatly appreciate it!

Gangbanging Vandalism

•February 22, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Hosted by Picasa Web Albums Fayetteville is apparently a growing place for gangs… I was traveling through the Petsmart parking lot off of Skibo and I saw these gang symbols on almost all of the signs in the parking lot… I am sure with the economic downturn in 2008, it has drawn many into gangs that possibly may of not been in them otherwise… I do not know a lot about gangs, but from what my friends have told me, most of the gangs here in Fayetteville have originally come from California… It kind of makes me sad to see this kind of vandalism and how these people think this is the only way they can earn a living. Our country really needs to work on the income inequality otherwise we will continue to have an increase in these types of social problems. This post was really to promote awareness and caution for those who encounter these types of symbols. If anyone wants to identify what it means or what gang it is from, by all means please leave a comment! Thanks in advance!

The Secret World of Arrietty

•February 17, 2012 • 1 Comment

Today, Friday the 17th of February 2012 is the release date in America for The Secret World of Arrietty. This is one of the latest movies to come from Studio Ghibli. The movie was based on a British author’s work from the 1950s called “The Borrowers” and the book was adapted to the screen with the help of the great Miyazaki. These last few films were not directed by Miyazaki, but were definitely influenced by him. The Earth and the Sea (which I did not watch) was apparently directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son and this film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi. This film is focusing on the story of a family of little people who call themselves Borrowers because they take things from households in order to sustain themselves. I’d like to think of the term Borrowers as a more polite way of saying LITTLE THIEVES!! I first saw the previews for this movie a couple of months ago and I have been anticipating the release of the film ever since. My plans are to go today and watch the premier of the movie at the Market Fair Cinema with my sister for the 9:30 showing. If anyone is in the Fayetteville area and willing to meet up with me then shoot me an email. My plans are to give a review after I have seen the film tonight! Hopefully that will be posted either Saturday or Sunday. Anyways go support Studio Ghibli and enjoy the movie!

Tofu Fueled Automobiles?!

The world is a much different place than it was fifty years ago, even just ten years ago! Within the end of last year the population “officially” reached a grand total of 7 billion people! I am not sure how the UN population fund tracks the world’s population, but either way it is an extroardinary thing to say our planet is home to 7 billion people. Since the world is changing at such a rapid pace, there are certain issues that we are now having to deal with prior to the rapid increase in population. Global climate change, hyper-inflated prices for food, energy needs. This is why I have decided to write a short entry about this unique company in Japan. Tofu is a major ingrediant in recipes for East Asian countries and one company in Japan has decided to mix tofu and potato skins together in order to produce energy. Typically I would complain that food is for consumption and is not intended to be utilized for energy concerning machinary, but this company is taking the waste products that are created while producing tofu. Therefore there is not a increase in food demands outside the factors of human consumption. This is one major problem I have against utilizing corn for our ethanoyl here in the United States. Corn is a major staple for a lot of the products around the world and the change in consumption is just one out of many reasons why food prices are continually rising. The Brazilians decided sugar was a good substitute and now the Japanese are looking at tofu waste products. I have included the video at the end of this post, so I would encourage you to check it out and I hope it gives some food for thought! —>> Get my little play on words there!

Taken with my iPod Touch

Well as some of you know I have been having a horrible experience with my current phone company H2O Wireless. I have spent countless hours with them on the phone, so I have been traveling around trying to find another alternative to my current phone service. I spoke with one representative from H2O Wireless and they told me I would not receive a refund for my inability to text for these past weeks. The supervisor told me that H2O policy is not to issue credits or refunds. Anyways I traveled to the T-Mobile store this past weekend (love the new interior redesign by the way) and I checked out the phones while I was there. This was my first encounter with a Windows Phone 7 and I was actually impressed! I thought the UI was very clever and it was a slick looking device. HTC has always been a personal favorite of mine for phones and they did an outstanding job with this Windows phone. Since Windows Phone 7 is still an emerging mobile OS, I know the apps are lacking, but in due time they will increase to the same quantity as seen in the Marketplace and the App Store. I am surprised I liked this phone, particularly because I am strictly a Mac/ Ubuntu user. Check it out for yourself! Oh, and I have decided to go with the $30 a month plan with T-Mobile that includes 1500 minutes/texts and 30 megabytes of data. What do you all think? Is that enough? I’m trying to save money so I think it will suffice.

Kakao Talk

Lately H2O Wireless has been the worst mobile service I have encounter. They changed some of the mobile features for my plan (the most important feature which was FREE international SMS) and for the past three months my SMS in general has stopped working. I call about twice a month in order for them to address the problem and even then its an act of congress. Well needless to say since I can no longer text my friends abroad for free, I have found a very nice alternative. The only problem is that my friends need to either have an iPhone, Android phone or Blackberry. The program is called Kakao Talk and has recently been getting a lot of positive reviews. There are plenty of nice little features with this program but my favorite is that I can send a message to my friends abroad! I also think the app links your mobile number to your account which means your friends can easily find you just by searching for your mobile number. Anyways I hope you all enjoy this short, but nice little tip!

Fudan University

•January 9, 2012 • Leave a Comment

China has not left me mind. I have been desperately wanting to travel back since I got back in 2010 and it looks as though God is granting my wish! I am proud to say I have been accepted to Fudan University in Shanghai to study Chinese for a five week intensive course. I am very humble to receive this honor and I am going to spend a considerable amount of time studying Chinese so I may place high over at Fudan. The scholarship covers my living expenses, meals and tuition costs! The only costs I will have to endure are the plane tickets (which are continuing to rise) and some field trip costs to Beijing and Hangzhou! I am not sure if I want to travel back to Beijing because I did not enjoy it. I sensed a lot of anti-Americanism there, but I have heard many great things about Hangzhou! If I do travel to Beijing it would be to hopefully see my two nieces, half sister and her husband. I submitted all of the final requirements for this scholarship and I am waiting for my documents to arrive to Fudan! Now all I need to worry about is increasing in my Chinese and raising enough money for the plane ticket! I will keep everyone posted!
